I have been involved in
furniture-making and wood trades all my working life, more than
35 years. Most of that time has been spent in the area of Herefordshire
which borders Wales - the Welsh Marches.
I trained as a furniture maker
with companies in Hereford and Worcester, and then worked for a
number of employers before setting up my own furniture business.
This prospered for several years, until changing circumstances
led me to resume the education which I had abandoned prematurely. A
boat-building course was followed by a BA in Applied Furniture
Studies and an MA in Design Enterprise, and I taught furniture-making
and carpentry and joinery in a number of further education colleges.
During this time I continued to make furniture, and eventually
I decided to set up my own workshop again in the Shropshire town
of Bishops Castle.
In addition to undertaking commissions for furniture and joinery,
I am now in a position to share with others my passion for creating
beautiful furniture by offering courses in cabinetmaking to students – of
any age. I can also provide training for young people in woodwork
for the construction industry. My qualifications for doing so include
PGCE (post compulsory) and membership of the Institute for Learning. I
am also a Fellow of the Institute of Carpenters and a Licentiate
of the City and Guilds Institute.
Years spent in proximity to woodworking machinery have made me
acutely aware of health and safety issues in the industry. I believe
that a safe working environment is essential for efficiency and
productivity and I am planning to offer health and safety training
as well as advice and consultancy to other small businesses.
Sustainablity and care for the
environment are concerns for everybody today. Wood is the ultimate
renewable resource and as a furniture maker I am able to make full
use of local timber and materials whenever possible. My home is
in Bishops
Castle, minimising the distance I travel to my workshop, but my
customers live in all parts of the country, many of them in London,
and it is a pleasure to encourage people to visit this historic
market town set in the beautiful Shropshire hills. |
